My Videos / Settings Have Disappeared!

Have you launched Insights Capture only to find that all of your previously recorded videos are missing??
Well don't worry!
Your videos aren't gone, they're still on your PC!
This post'll explain:
- What went wrong
- How you can "restore" your previous Insights Capture install
Breakdown
To be specific, your Insights Capture videos aren't lost.
Those recordings are still on your PC, in the Video Storage Folder you chose when first setting up Insights Capture!
The issue here is that Insights Capture's internal database has been "wiped".
We've seen this happen because of:
- A bug introduced in Overwolf Version
0.266.132
(released at the start of 2025)
- A "Storage Pressure/Eviction" event (which can happen if your
C
drive is critically low on space)
In either case, Insights Capture will create a backup
of its internal database on:
- Every Recording
- App Launch
Using those previously made backups
, we can "restore" the "lost" recordings, settings & more :D
How to Restore your "lost" Content
The following will explain how to restore from a previously made Insights Capture backup.
As always, you can request help with this process via our Discord's Tech-Support Channel
We'd be more than happy to assist with this process, since it can be confusing :/
Step Zero: Find your Insights Capture Video Folder

Before you can restore from your previously made backups, you'll need to actually find where they're saved on your PC.
By default, Insights Capture will:
- Save its recordings in
C:\Users\<your name>\Videos\Overwolf\Insights Capture
- Save its backups in
C:\Users\<your name>\Videos\Overwolf\Insights Capture\backups
But there's a pretty good chance you decided to store your videos in a separate folder or drive
In any case, open your Windows File Explorer & Navigate to your Insights Capture Video Folder
Inside, you should see a folder called backups
, which should contain a series of Insights-Capture-<some numbers>.bak
files

Step One: Launch Insights Capture & Open your Settings

Step Two: Click on the App
Settings Tab

Step Three: Scroll until you see a Restore Backup
button
- If you don't see a
Restore Backup
button, please give the app a reinstall!
- This should force Overwolf to install the latest version of Insights Capture.
Step Four: Click on the Restore Backup
button
Step Five: In the File Explorer Window that opens, navigate to where you stored your Insights Capture recordings
- In this example, I'm saving my videos in a folder called
womp_test_two
on my E
drive
- So, if I want to find my recordings, I navigate to
E:\womp_test_two\Insights Capture
- And if I want to find my backups, I navigate to
E:\womp_test_two\Insights Capture\backups
Step Six: Open the backups
folder in your Insights Capture
video folder

Step Seven: Select the "largest" Insights-Capture-<some numbers>.bak
file in the backups
folder

If your backups are missing your recordings / super small (< 1kb), please checkout the "My backups are missing my videos" section below!
Step Eight: Pick between "merging" & "using the backup as is"

- Select the "Merge" option if you'd like to carry over any new recordings/settings
- Select the "Use as is" option if you'd like to completely replace your current install with the backup's contents
Step Nine: Finally, click the blue Restore Backup
button

- The app should restart once the backup has been "restored"
- If you see a "backup restored with errors", that just means Insights Capture was unable to find those recordings in your current Video Folder. They may have previously been deleted from your File System, but not Insights Capture-
- If the app does not restart, or seemingly nothing happens after you click the button, please reach out on our Discord's Tech Support Channels
My Backups are Missing my Previously Recorded Videos

If your app "reset" between 11/24 & 02/25
You've probably ran into two separate bugs D:
- Bug One: The "app wipe" issue introduced by Overwolf in OverwolfClient Version
0.266.132
- Bug Two: An Insights Capture issue that caused
Deathcam
recordings to trigger the backup creation process after every death (fixed in v2.5.0.9
of Insights Capture)
By themselves, each bug is kind of annoying- but ultimately "fixable"
But together, they can result in deletion of your previously made backups
This is because (at the time) Insights Capture only saves the 10 latest backups
Older backups are purged as new ones are made
So if your app wiped & then you continued recording/creating deathcams, you could quickly create 10 new backups (which would end-up purging your previously made backups)
So uhm. How can I fix this?
- At the moment, we don't have a fix for "lost" backups ;-;
- Once a backup is deleted, we don't really have a way of getting it back (at least not without advanced digital forensic tools)
So what's lost?
An Insights Capture backup contains the following:
- A list of every recording made
- The Game Events/Stats/APM/Bookmarks collected or created throughout your recording
- Customized video/clip titles
- Your Upload History (Discord, TikTok, Insights, etc)
- Your Recording Settings
So if you're unable to find your Insights Capture backup, it means you've lost everything but the recordings themselves.
What is Insights doing to fix this in future cases?
I won't go in-depth here, but data loss is a problem we take very seriously.
We are deeply ashamed that something like this happened, especially while we were away on our Winter Break.
Therefore, we're looking into a couple of projects that'll help ensure that this doesn't happen in the future. We're also looking into ways to reduce the impact of a backup-loss, in the case we can't prevent its deletion.
If you have any suggestions or comments you'd like to add about this issue, please feel free to send them our way via the Discord's Feature-Suggestion Channel
So how can I get my recordings back into Insights Capture
The easiest option, is to use our Import Feature.
However, the Import System makes a copy of the video you're moving.
If you:
- Set your new Insights Capture Video Folder to the folder you're importing from
- Then import all the videos inside that folder
You'll end up creating a duplicate of every file in that folder, which is incredibly annoying to deal with.
Instead, you should:
- 1.) Move your old Video Folder to some other folder/drive (you can also re-name the folder instead of copying it)
- 2.) Launch Insights Capture & ensure its Video Folder is set to some other folder
- 3.) Click the "Recordings" tab, then click on "Import Videos" button (the white downwards pointing arrow to the right of the folder icon)
- 4.) Select all of the videos from your old video folder
- Note: Since Insights Capture is creating a copy of every video, you'll need to ensure your PC's Storage Device has enough space to hold two of your video folders
- For example, my Video Folder contains
1,242 GB
worth of videos. To import them all, I'd need 2484
Gigabytes of free space on my drive.
- To avoid this, you can import your videos in small batches- Just make sure you delete the original recording once you verify its been successfully copied over
